Since its launch in 2008, the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) has become a cornerstone for self-employment and micro-enterprise development in India. Spearheaded by the Ministry of MSME and implemented through agencies like KVIC, KVIBs, District Industries Centres (DICs), and various banks, PMEGP provides financial assistance to individuals looking to start or expand small businesses.
The scheme has played a transformative role by facilitating the creation of over 7.8 lakh businesses and nearly 64 lakh jobs across the country. In rural and semi-urban areas, it has empowered first-time entrepreneurs, many from marginalized and underrepresented communities, by bridging the gap between aspiration and opportunity. PMEGP offers subsidies on loans for ventures in manufacturing, services, and trading sectors.
And in states like Nagaland, the program has helped artisans, farmers, and youth-led enterprises gain a foothold in local markets, fostering a more self-reliant and vibrant economy. Equally important is its training component, which ensures beneficiaries are equipped with essential skills in financial literacy, marketing, and operations. As India continues to champion MSMEs as engines of growth, PMEGP stands out as a vital tool in driving inclusive development, rural upliftment, and entrepreneurial empowerment at the grassroots level.
